Annual Exhibition 2016

The Society hosted its annual exhibition in Retford Town Hall on Saturday 7th May. We were delighted to welcome an excellent attendance of around 120 visitors during the day and to hear their appreciative comments.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm for the content of the images and much praise for the standard of the work on show. The display included work from members who do not normally enter our competitions as well as those who enjoy competing. The exhibitors represented all levels of experience within the club and a wide range of ages.

This year, for the first time, we included some examples of the competition entries we have seen during the year. This included the en-prints, where five 6” x 4” images on a theme are mounted together. This format is easier for beginners to enter and also a different challenge for the more seasoned competitors. Members responded enthusiastically to requests for their entries of ‘Panels of Three’. These are sets of three images on a theme or telling a story. The variety of these on show certainly added to the interest of the event and gave people considering joining the Society an idea of what happens in our competitions.

We were able to show one example of a five image portfolio, showing the versatility of the photographer over a number of subjects and styles and the audio visual images entered this year were on show for all to see.

The event was also an opportunity for both members and the public to see much of the new Lottery Funded equipment being put to good use. Everyone agreed that we can now present the club in a much better way and do justice to the skill, enthusiasm and dedication of so many members.

With our members having done the work of producing such an array of over 120 photographs, we presented visitors with the task of choosing their favourite image in colour and their favourite black and white. Thank you to everyone who took this request so seriously and studied the images thoughtfully before casting their votes. At the end of the day over 100 voting slips were counted and the results were:

Favourite Colour Image –

Winner, Geoff Stoddart ‘Splashing Kingfisher’
Runners up, Dik Allison ‘Puffin Patrol’ and
Des Lloyd ‘Barn Owl Coming in to Land’

Favourite Black & White Image –

Winner, Jayne Mair ‘Time for Reflection’
Runner Up, Dik Allison ‘Bridge by Falling Fosse’

The next opportunity to see the club’s work and also something very different in the form of photomicrography – photography through a microscope – will be at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve on July 17th as part of their ‘SPOT IT – ID IT’ event. We would be pleased to see you there.

Any community groups interested in including a display of our work in their events are invited to contact us via the web site: www.retford-photographic.co.uk or to come and talk about opportunities at the Idle Valley event.
Finally, many thanks to the staff at the Town Hall for their enthusiasm and freely given help in staging the event, which made us feel so welcome and added to the success of our signage and display.
