Annual Presentation Dinner

Members had an opportunity for a social get together before the summer break at the final event of this season - our presentation dinner at Retford Golf Club. A full dining room or members and friends enjoyed an excellent carvery meal before the formal proceedings.

Our new President, Jenny Smith, welcomed our special guests, David Towers, President of Retford Rotary Club, and his wife Pauline. Jenny first thanked her predecessor as President, Alan Burkwood, who had completed his three year term of office and extended further thanks to retiring committee members and a welcome to new ones.

Jenny reviewed the year’s activities which had included a wide variety of topics from our speakers, workshops, mixed fortunes in competitions, a number of successful displays and another great group trip to the Farne Islands. Of particular note was the increased number of entries during this year in digital competitions now that we have our own bespoke software which makes it easy to submit entries through our web site. ‘Show and Tell’ evenings when members bring a few images and give their view of them as opposed to the views we hear when they are viewed by judges, have been a particularly successful innovation.

David spoke about the work of Retford Rotary Club. We were interested to hear of the success of the Rotary movement’s efforts to eradicate polio, with only 39 cases recorded worldwide last year. More locally they have been actively involved with the Idle Valley Nature Reserve where we have held displays. They are raising £12,000 to establish a boardwalk to make the site more accessible for disabled visitors.

Jenny thanked David and moved on to the presentation of trophies and certificates to members who had done well during the season. Joyce Bell had done particularly well this year, winning both the colour and mono print categories for the Advanced Photographers section. There was a good spread of winners this year. Jenny’s assistant in the presentations, Harold Gay, won the Brian Mosely Memorial Audio Visual Trophy and Jenny presented her husband John with the trophy for the most points for projected images in the Club Photographers section.

The President has a trophy to award to the person they feel has contributed most to the Society during the year. This year Alan Burkwood selected Dik Allison as the recipient in recognition of his regular help with the IT equipment at the meetings and having written the software to make submitting digital images easy for everyone.

Retford Rotary Club presented us with the beautiful wooden camera trophy which is given to our Photographer of the Year and traditionally their President presents it to the winner. This year we had joint winners whose consistent success across the season saw them with equal scores. Des Lloyd received a number of runner up certificates and the trophy for the mono print portfolio. The colour print portfolio was won by Russell Nye, who also won the Club section trophy for the most points over the season for colour prints. David Towers presented the trophy to Des Lloyd in Russell’s absence and they will share it during the year.

A special presentation of a bouquet of flowers was made to Jayne Mair for all her work for the Society during many years and we wished her well as she left us having moved too far away to attend regularly.
