A PRACTICAL NIGHT

22nd September 2025
Members like an opportunity to get out their cameras and do some practical work. We set aside an evening for exactly that in the form of a ‘Tabletop’ session. Everyone is invited to bring whatever they like to provide photographic subjects, backdrops, lighting etc. to create a collection of photo opportunities on tables around the room.

Ben Searson had brought some of his Lego in the form of a large car and he set it against a black backdrop. Also with a transport theme, Tom Coulson brought some of his collection of miniature commercial vehicles and some great sheets of printed backdrop featuring cobbles and brickwork to enable realistic scene setting.

There was a collection of old bellows cameras and a mini studio in which to photograph them Near them was a lovely pocket watch and elsewhere in the room a Kodak box Brownie from c.1955 was taking members down memory lane. One member had gone to see the Queen as a child, entrusted with her parents’ camera and permission to take the entire new reel of film – all eight shots of it! Fortunately, one was a good enough shot to be sent to be Mayor.

Dik and Joy Allison had taken a black backdrop with a selection of mirrors and holders and a box of specimen flowers for everyone to arrange to suit themselves. Lee Dalgleish had also taken a collection, which in his case featured ornaments and candles which could be lit to give a great variety of subject matter. There were also several autumnal collections.

The nature of the evening gave a chance for people to speak to each other. This was particularly beneficial as there were several of the members there who have joined this year and not yet really had a chance to chat at length with members. There was the ever present refreshment offering so everyone enjoyed a social evening exchanging ideas and advice while getting some nice shots and getting to know each other.

Next week is our first competition of the season and members have now submitted their entries of prints and digital shots which will be judged by local judge, Peter Jones.
