MEMBERS' NIGHT
13th April 2026
Members were grateful to the members of the Committee who set up tables to demonstrate various aspects of photography, taking the word in its widest sense.
Lee Dalgleish had recently run a session demonstrating how he uses Lightroom to process his photos and his contribution was a rerun of that evening. He used one of his bird photos to speak about how the tools in the system can be configured to make it as easy to work with in your own chosen workflow as possible. He then went on to describe his processes as he did a live demonstration of making something creditable of a photo which, at first glance, seemed hopeless and which may would cull.
President Alan Burkwood had various books for members to look at and a selection of his own printed images. He was discussing composition with members who came to his display. This was a chance to think about some of the issues which judges regularly pick up on, suggesting various elements be cropped off.

Secretary Jenny Smith had brought her mount board cutter and was advising on how she cute her mounts for her competition images. This is a big investment for new members and they need to be sure they know how to cut their mounts if they want to produce their own images for judging. There are various techniques, but it was made clear that each person was showing their working method and not claiming it was the best or only one.

The final two options were demonstrating how members might consider using their images. Mike Vickers had brought a calendar he had made using a selection of his beautiful bird photos. Ben Searson enjoys monochrome and was showing how photos can be made into a book or a magazine. The systems for producing these items are many and various, but it is helpful to see how someone has used them as a starting point to going further alone.

We have one final meeting of the season before we all return refreshed and invigorated by our summer holidays and expeditions with our cameras. Next week will see our AGM, but more interestingly the presentation of the club trophies for the 2025 – 2026 season which are awarded based on points gained in the competitions through the season.
Full details of the current season’s events are on the club web site: http://www.retford-photographic.co.uk/ and the new programme for the 2026 – 2027 programme will appear over the summer. An early peak at it suggests we have a great new season in prospect.
Meetings are weekly on Mondays at 7.30pm in St Joseph’s Hall, Babworth Road, Retford
